The aim of this article is to consider tolerance as a value of contemporary society. The argument it defends is that tolerance is the value most consistent with and necessary to the pursuit of peaceful coexistence. The argument of this article is that tolerance is of central importance. A part of the concern of this article is to explain why tolerance should be embraced. The author touches upon the role of tolerance in medicine and shows its relationship with the Principle of Respect for Patient's Autonomy.
